How to use these cards: Say the answer out loud before you flip the card, and mark it honestly. Revisit the cards you missed tomorrow rather than rereading them right away. Progress is kept only while this page is open. For the full explanations behind each card, see the core notes.

Deck 1 · Cloud concepts

Models, scaling, and who manages the stack.

10 cards
1.1What is cloud computing?

On-demand computing services over the network, usually billed for what you use.

1.2What is the difference between public, private, and hybrid cloud?

Public is a provider's shared cloud. Private is dedicated to one organization. Hybrid connects the two.

1.3What is the consumption-based model?

You pay for what you use, as an operating expense, instead of a large capital purchase up front.

1.4What is the difference between vertical and horizontal scaling?

Vertical makes one resource larger. Horizontal adds more copies of the resource.

1.5What is high availability?

The workload keeps running through a failure, often by using more than one availability zone.

1.6Who patches the guest operating system on an Azure virtual machine?

You do. Microsoft manages the hardware and the hypervisor.

1.7Who manages the operating system on Azure App Service?

Microsoft. You manage the application and the data.

1.8What does serverless mean?

You provide the code. The provider runs and scales the servers. Azure Functions is the usual example.

1.9What is infrastructure as a service?

You rent compute, storage, and networking and you manage the operating system. A virtual machine is the Azure example.

1.10What is software as a service?

A finished application the provider runs. You manage your data and who can use it. Microsoft 365 is the usual example.

Deck 2 · Architecture

Regions, zones, and the management hierarchy.

10 cards
2.1What is an Azure region?

A set of datacenters deployed inside a latency-defined perimeter.

2.2What is an availability zone?

A physically separate group of datacenters in a region, with its own power, cooling, and networking.

2.3What is a region pair?

Two regions in the same geography that Microsoft pairs for platform replication and prioritized recovery.

2.4What is a sovereign region?

A separate cloud, such as Azure Government or Azure operated by 21Vianet in China. It is not a normal region you move a resource into.

2.5What is the Azure management hierarchy, from the widest scope down?

Management group, subscription, resource group, resource.

2.6What is a resource group?

A logical container for resources that share a lifecycle. Resources in the group can be in different regions.

2.7What is an availability set?

A grouping of virtual machines into fault domains and update domains inside one datacenter. It is not an availability zone.

2.8Can one virtual machine be in an availability set and an availability zone?

No. You choose one of those placements when you create the virtual machine.

2.9What does an Azure subscription bound?

Billing and access. Resources are billed to one subscription.

2.10What is the difference between a scale set and an availability set?

A scale set grows and shrinks identical virtual machines. An availability set spreads them across fault and update domains.

Deck 3 · Services and identity

Compute, network, storage, and who can sign in.

10 cards
3.1What do you choose when you create a virtual machine?

A size, storage for the disks, and a virtual network.

3.2When does stopping a virtual machine stop compute charges?

When it is stopped (deallocated). Stopping it only inside the guest can leave the compute charge in place.

3.3What is Azure Virtual Desktop?

A service that delivers virtualized Windows desktops and apps. It is not a single server virtual machine.

3.4What is the difference between VPN Gateway and ExpressRoute?

VPN Gateway encrypts a tunnel over the internet. ExpressRoute is a private connection through a provider and does not use the public internet.

3.5What is a private endpoint?

A private IP address on your virtual network for a platform service, so clients do not need a public address.

3.6Which storage type holds unstructured objects?

Blob storage. Azure Files is a file share. Disks attach to virtual machines.

3.7Name the blob access tiers.

Hot, cool, cold, and archive. Archive data is offline until you rehydrate it.

3.8What is the difference between locally redundant and geo-redundant storage?

Locally redundant storage keeps copies in one datacenter. Geo-redundant storage adds an asynchronous copy in the paired region.

3.9What is Microsoft Entra ID?

The cloud directory for users, groups, and application sign-in. Entra Domain Services is the managed domain-join option.

3.10What is the difference between Owner and Contributor?

Owner can manage resources and grant access. Contributor can manage resources but cannot grant access.

Deck 4 · Cost, governance, and operations

The bill, the rules, and the tools that deploy or watch resources.

10 cards
4.1What does Azure RBAC decide?

Who can take an action at a scope. It is not the tool that denies a resource in the wrong region.

4.2What does Azure Policy decide?

Whether a resource is allowed to exist, such as an allowed region or a required tag.

4.3What does a CanNotDelete lock do?

The resource can be read and changed, but not deleted, until someone removes the lock.

4.4Do tags grant permission?

No. They are metadata, often used to group cost. They are not a security boundary.

4.5Which tool estimates cost before you deploy?

The Azure pricing calculator. Cost Management reviews spend you already have.

4.6What is Azure Hybrid Benefit?

A way to apply existing Windows Server or SQL Server licenses so the Azure compute price is lower.

4.7What is an ARM template?

A JSON file that describes Azure resources so you can deploy the same infrastructure again.

4.8What is Azure Arc for?

Bringing servers and other resources outside Azure into Azure management, including policy and monitoring.

4.9What does Azure Advisor do?

It recommends improvements for reliability, security, performance, cost, and operational excellence.

4.10What is the difference between Service Health and Azure Monitor?

Service Health reports Azure platform issues and planned maintenance. Azure Monitor collects your metrics, logs, and alerts.

Memory notes

Groupings that make the highest-yield AZ-900 facts easier to recall.

Who patches

  • Virtual machine you patch the guest OS
  • App Service Microsoft patches the OS
  • Functions Microsoft runs the servers

Places

  • Region a set of datacenters
  • Zone a separate site in that region
  • Availability set fault and update domains, not a zone

Hierarchy

Management group, then subscription, then resource group, then resource.

Connect

Peering joins virtual networks on the backbone. VPN Gateway uses the internet. ExpressRoute does not.

Allow versus exist

  • RBAC who may act
  • Policy what may exist
  • Lock what may not be deleted or changed

Bill tools

Pricing calculator before you deploy. Cost Management after. Tags organize the bill. They do not grant access.
